Its all of sudden that information has appeared on the next generation of AMD Radeon HD 8000 GPUs, codenamed “Sea Islands”. Just a few days ago, AMD leaked the specifications of the Radeon HD 8800 Series cards that uses the GPU “Oland (XT / Pro) “, but these early informations already got updated especially regarding what we know from the output line PCPER GPUs Radeon HD 8900 “Venus (XT / Pro)” which will then become the high-end parts.
The Radeon HD 8000 GPU family
According to the infos that have spread, the family of AMD GPUsRadeon HD 8000 “Sea Islands” GPUs will also use the 28nm manufacturing process. It is presented as an ‘optimized’ variant family of the “Southern Islands”, and will include a “Venus” as high-end with the Radeon HD 8900 Series, the “Oland” for midrange with the Radeon HD 8800 Series, and “Mars” for entry-level models with the Radeon HD 8700 (possibly) .
Radeon HD 8970 XTX and Radeon HD 8950 XT
According to PCPER, the Radeon HD 8970 XTX uses the Venus GPU (formerly called “Tenerife”) that has a surface of 380 by 420mm which fits 5.1 billion transistor spread over 2560 Stream Processors (25 % more than its predecessor “Tahiti XT”), 160 Texture Units and within 32 – 48 ROPs. This should be sufficient to deliver 20% more computing power (4.5 TFLOPS) that the Radeon HD 7970. Regarding the Radeon HD 8950 XT GPU, this one should come emitted with with 2304 SPs, 144 TUs and 32 ROPs.
Both cards should share 3GB of GDDR5 memory and 384-bit bus. If so, if the memory runs at 6GHz +, we can assume that they could provide a bandwidth of 320GB/s!
Launch Details of the Radeon HD 8000 Series
Right now there is not much else informations available out there. All information on the Radeon HD 8000 suggest that production will begin in late Q4 2012 and the first GPUs may hit the market in early 2013.
