Galaxy GOC 2013 – Shanghai

It’s been talked about since now a few months – Galaxy will be hosting China’s largest Live OC competition on December 14-15 in Shanghai. Know as the GOC 2013 which stands for Galaxy Overcloking Carnival 2013, the GOC will be gathering invited overclockers from all around the world to compete on the latest Galaxy Hardware.

Overclocking-TV will be streaming live from Shanghai – but let’s first introduce the details of the event.

Galaxy GOC 2013 – When, where and why?

Galaxy is hosting the GOC event since now a few years. If you haven’t heard of it – it’s normal. Back then, the event was exclusively targeted at the Chinese market in which Galaxy occupies a strong position.  But this year things changed. With the Hall of Fame series hardware released by Galaxy, the aim is to also get exposure worldwide – resulting in such opening up.

The event will take place in Shanghai on December 14-15. The venue will be the Shanghai Pudong Expo.

Galaxy GOC 2013 – Event Schedule

The competition is taking place on December 14th and 15th, Galaxy added an additional day to the schedule on the 13th to allow overclockers to get hands on the hardware (especially the very freshly released 780Ti HOF card). That day should allow everyone to get familiar with it, learn how to mod the card and probably prepare the insulation of the hardware to ease-of the competition start on the 14th.

So first day, nothing to add – I think the schedule is clear enough as to what will happen :)

With a run-down similar to what we are use to have in OC competitions, the first day (classic battle) should see the competition kick off at 12:45 – with the whole morning allocated to preparation and speeches.

On the second day, things are more relaxed. With a contest starting around 1pm. The goal is to break record and donate the prize money to charity. An interesting schema here as this is something totally new for the OC community.

Now, let’s have a quick look at the benchmarks and competition rules.

Galaxy GOC 2013 – Competitors, benchmarks and rules

GOC 2013 – The contestants

In total, 20 overclockers are invited to the GOC 2013. Hand-picked by Galaxy, these overclockers overall rank among the top of this year’s ranking and we find in the list familiar faces that have been taking part to OC contest in the past and this year.

The funny and interesting fact about these teams is that they haven’t be constituted by the overclockers themselves – but through a draw made by Galaxy. This explains combinations like Belgium and China, UK and Hong Kong or US and Poland, etc. If the language barrier will for sure be strong in some cases, it will be interesting to see how well the Overclocking language succeeds.

GOC 2013 – The benchmarks

On the classic battle day, the focus will be 3D only with 3Dmark11 and FireStrike. The classic battle will last for four hours – this allows each team to allocate about an hour for each for the following benchmarks:

  • 3DMark11 Performance
  • 3DMark11 Extreme
  • 3DMark Fire Strike
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme

For the score calculation, the ranking in each benchmark will be rewarded with points with a maximum score at 100 on all benchmarks. Check the table below for the full score calculation details:

On the second day (freestyle battle) things are slightly different. The contestants will be using the HOF 760 card and will again have 4 hours to run freely any of the following benchmarks:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike & Fire Strike Extreme
  • Cloud Gate
  • Ice Storm & Ice Storm Extreme
  • 3DMark11 Performance, Extreme &Entry
  • 3DMark Vantage Performance, Extreme & Entry

The contestants can use the hardware of the first day, or their own hardware since there is no limitation. For each record broken – Galaxy will be awarding $1000 to charity. We do not know which charity yet, but we should find out soon.

GOC 2013 – Rules

As for other competitions, rules are “as usual”. Each team gets allocated a set of hardware at the start + a spare set in case of damage or death. The judges (Mad, Duck San and Fredyama San) will make sure with the Galaxy staff (Alex Au and Edward Chow) to enforce rules on stage.
